A brief history - Media Press Release Red Rock Carolyn Theatre January 2016 - 'Jill Meehan’s original Australian musical “Shannon... come home” first premiered at Drysdale in October 2014, tells the raw and emotional story of Shannon, an everyman farmer struggling through the hardships faced on the land in one of the worst droughts in Australian history between 2003 and 2010.
“There are three characters, Shannon, (played by poet Tim Sheed) his wife Kate, played by me, and the narrator and wonderful harpist Christine Middleton,” said Jill Meehan, the Musical Director, singer and songwriter of the show.
“In the show I want to honour our great country and illustrate the incredible hardship our farmers face at times and I do this by focussing on one man and his family on the land as he confronts hardship, despair and depression,” Jill says.
“Told through music song and poetry, the story takes you on a journey through the whole gamut of Shannon’s emotions,” Jill adds.
Jill has spent much of her adult life writing songs and compiling material for a production she dreamed would one day eventuate.
“I always felt strongly about supporting farming communities and local produce and when I lived in Gippsland in the late 90s, farmer suicide was on the increase. ‘Shannon…come home’ (a song I wrote about a local farmer who committed suicide), became the inspiration for writing a musical about this issue,” Jill says.
Jill also raises funds for 'Beyond Blue' on the day of each show to assist with awareness of Depression and supporting people who experience this.
The show which is supported by Dairy Australia’s Legendairy program & the Vic Farmers Federation, has a good mix of musical genres which include Folk Blues & Country. Combined with the beautiful harp playing of Narrator/Singer songwriter Christine Middleton, lilting vocals and magical guitar playing of Jill Meehan, and the raw emotion and warmth in the poetry of Tim Sheed, audiences will be treated to a feast of original songs and poetry, it captures the essence of farming life in one of the worst droughts in Australian history.'
